There are rumors that Webmoney is difficult an complicated system to work with.
Yes it somehow differs from PayPal or e-gold and yet not that difficlut if you understand basic ideas staying behind.
Obviously you can reffer to the official website www.wmtransfer.com to get all documentation.
But we offer here the most important features of the Webmoney in one page in order that newcomer gets clear idea.

Made with the Security in Mind
Basic authentication methods used everywhere else are ok for forums and blogs but not suitable for money holding accounts. Webmoney uses high-end methods to protect your valuables from online intruders such man-in-between, phishing, etc. This is one of the main differences between Webmoney and other systems which use only basic methods.
Be aware that it doesn't mean that you don't need to have your own responsibility to protect your computer from viruses and worms which can get direct access to your private keys.
Choose Your Client Program
In order to work with Webmoney you have to choose one of three alternatives called "Webmoney Keepers". Once you choose the keeper you can't switch to another one any more. They are:
- Keeper Classic
- Keeper Light
- Keeper Mobile (formely Telepat)
"Keeper Classic" is the program for Microsoft Windows which you can download from the official Webmoney website. This program sits in the system tray and allows you to handle all necessary operations in Webmoney as well as notify whenever you got incoming money transfers or messages within internal Webmoney postal system.
“
Webmoney Transfer is considered by the industry to be the most convenient and easy to use
”
non-bank online payment system in the world today.
"Keeper Light" is not a program but web service. You access Keeper Light through any modern web browser. It has a bit limited abilities but still good enough to maintain your online trading needs.
"Keeper Mobile" is a JavaScript program to work on mobile phone. It is most limited one good only for sending and receiving Webmoney. You can't seriously consider Keeper Mobile is independent alternative. It has some use in conjunction with other solutions. So merely you have only choice between Classic and Light.
Our pretty subjective recommendation for new users is Keeper Light. Unless you going to dig into very deep features of Webmoney from very beginning it will serve all your needs. It needs less maintenance efforts because the program itself runs on Webmoney's servers and you need only browser. Seems it is also the only choice for those who work on non-Windows platforms.
In fact there is indirect way how to get another alternative keeper later on. For instance it may be useful to have one "desktop" keeper and another one "mobile" while you on the go. But this paper doesn't cover this topic because it is rather not basic one.
WMID and Purses
When you sign in Webmoney issues you Id number of 12 digits. This number is known as WMID (Webmoney Id). This number going to be your permanent Id within Webmoney. But be aware that you not going to use WMID in money transactions. Unlike many other systems in Webmoney money transferred not between Id's but between so called "purses".
Each WMID may have several purses. Every user may create and delete his purses freely by his own. Why you may need several purses? First of all if you remember Webmoney offers different currencies to work with. Then each currency needs to have separate purse. Other reason may be if you wish to separate turnover form different operations of yours in sake of easier accounting. For instance one purse you can use for your online business, while another for your private entertainment, shopping, etc. Then you can create clear statements of your business transactions without need to cut out your private expenses.
Purse has also 12 digit number but differs from WMID by having one additional letter in the front. For instance Z123456789012 means that this purse carries WMZ currency (equal to USD) and E987654321098 is WME currency purse (Euro equivalent) and so on.
When you want to receive money from somebody you have to provide purse number, not WMID. And vice versa when you pay to somebody you transfer money to other's purse, not WMID. Often you may be asked to provide both WMID and purse. This is done for the sake of less potential errors. When payer enters purse number to transfer to, Webmoney provides him with the receiver's WMID. So he can compare both WMID's to be sure that there was no mistake.
The word "account" is not used in Webmoney context to avoid confusions. One may understand "account" as the single registered entity or WMID, and yet another may apply this word to purse as analogue of a bank account. Be aware of this fact when speak Webmoney.
Having somebody's purse number you can find out his/her WMID. But having a WMID you can't know what purses belong to this WMID.
Certification
In order to ensure payers in their transactions and yet have more flexibility Webmoney maintains different certification levels for their users. You can sign in Webmoney and stay anonymous all the time. If you use Webmoney only as a payment system for your online shopping then this may be good enough. You even can sell on Webmoney still remaining anonymous. But what if you want make your customers more confident when they decide to pay or not? Then you may get a certificate which proves that Webmoney knows your identity.
Webmoney maintains "Passport Service" the special website at passport.wmtransfer.com where every other Webmoney user can find out the most important information about you. Such as when have you been registered, what is level of your certification, what is your Business Level (BL) - an estimated coefficient of your activity, is there any positive or negative responses regarding you, etc. If you have certificate and provided your bio data and address to Webmoney, then Passport Service informs what of your personal data Webmoney got to know, but it is up to you to reveal or to conceal this data for public view.
There are more than two levels of certifications, but we shortly describe only one "Personal Certificate" which you may be interested in. Personal Certificate means that Webmoney got to know your personality and at least seen your passport or other Id. In order to obtain such certificate you have to approach personally any of multiple Webmoney Registrars close to you geographically. If there is no such you may send notary certified copy of your documents by mail to the main Registrar in Moscow. This certificate is subject to fee which is different for each Registrar. Central Registrar in Moscow charges 10 WMZ (equal to 10 USD).
There are may be cases when you obligated to get Personal Certificate. If you lost your Webmoney access codes and you are an anonymous user, then the only way to recover them is to be certified. If another certified user you have dealt with, claims you are a fraudster then Webmoney Arbitrage may block your account and ask you to get Personal Certificate in order to prove your identity first.
